Trauma & PTSD Counseling

Trauma & PTSD Counseling at Your Own Pace, on Your Own Terms

If a painful experience still follows you into your days and nights, you are not broken and you are not alone. At Restoration Pointe Counseling Center, trauma and PTSD counseling is built around your safety, your pace, and your consent. Whether you are in Norfolk, Newport News, or anywhere in Virginia through secure telehealth, we walk with you toward steadier ground, guiding you through the storm one gentle step at a time.

Understanding Trauma and PTSD

Trauma is not defined by how big an event looks from the outside. It is how your mind and body responded to something overwhelming, frightening, or deeply unsafe, and how those responses continue to shape your life afterward. Sometimes it grows from a single moment, such as an accident, an assault, a loss, a medical emergency, or a combat experience. Other times it builds slowly over years.

Complex or developmental trauma often takes root when harm is repeated, such as childhood abuse or neglect, ongoing violence, or relationships that were never truly safe. It can shape how you see yourself, how you trust others, and how at home you feel in your own body. Post-traumatic stress, or PTSD, is one of the ways the nervous system tries to protect you long after the danger has passed. Trauma counseling gives those responses room to be understood rather than judged.

You Do Not Have to Carry This Alone

Reaching out can feel like the hardest part. Trauma often teaches you to stay guarded, to keep going, and to believe that talking about it might make things worse. Those instincts made sense when survival was the goal. In therapy, we honor them while gently offering something different: a steady, unhurried space where you set the direction and nothing is forced.

Our founder and CEO, Alicia M. Rincones, MA, LPC, NCC, is a U.S. Navy veteran who understands that healing cannot be rushed. Across our Norfolk and Newport News offices and throughout the Hampton Roads region, we meet you where you are, whether this is your first time seeking help or you have tried counseling before and are ready to try again.

Common Responses to Trauma

Trauma affects people in many different ways, and there is no single right way to react. You may recognize some of these experiences, or only a few. Any of them can be a reason to reach out.

  • Flashbacks or intrusive memories that pull you back into the past
  • Nightmares or restless, broken sleep
  • Feeling constantly on guard, tense, or easily startled (hypervigilance)
  • Avoiding people, places, conversations, or reminders tied to what happened
  • Emotional numbness, or feeling cut off from yourself and those you love
  • Feeling unsafe in your own body, or disconnected from it
  • Waves of anxiety, panic, anger, guilt, or shame
  • Trouble concentrating, or a sense that you are just going through the motions

Our Trauma-Informed Approach

Trauma-informed care means we begin with safety and never lose sight of it. We move at a pace you can tolerate, we ask before we go deeper, and we treat your consent as essential at every step. You are never asked to relive the worst moments before you feel ready, and you always remain in the driver's seat.

Because no two people heal the same way, we draw thoughtfully from well-established, evidence-informed approaches and tailor them to you. When faith matters to you, faith-integrated counseling is woven in always and only when welcomed, and never imposed.

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to help the brain process stuck memories
  • Trauma-focused CBT to gently reshape painful beliefs and reactions
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) to understand and care for the parts of you shaped by trauma
  • Somatic and grounding work to help your body feel safe again
  • Mindfulness and regulation skills for moments when emotions run high

What to Expect

Healing from trauma is not a straight line, and it does not happen all at once. Early sessions focus on getting to know you, understanding your goals, and building a foundation of safety and coping tools before we ever approach painful memories. You decide what to share and when, and we adjust the pace together as we go.

Every relationship begins with a free consultation, so you can ask questions and get a feel for whether we are the right fit before committing to anything. From there, care is available in person at our Norfolk and Newport News offices or through secure telehealth anywhere in Virginia, making it easier to find support that works around your life.

Frequently asked questions

Will I have to talk about the worst thing that happened right away?

No. We never push you to relive painful details before you feel ready. Trauma counseling at RPCC is paced and consent-based, which means we build safety and coping skills first and only approach difficult memories when and if you choose to. You stay in control of the process throughout.

Do you work with veterans, first responders, and military families?

Yes. Our founder is a U.S. Navy veteran, and we bring genuine understanding to the experiences of veterans, first responders, and military families in the Hampton Roads region. We recognize the weight of military trauma and the culture surrounding service, and we tailor care to honor it.

What is the difference between single-incident and complex trauma?

Single-incident trauma stems from one overwhelming event, such as an accident, assault, or sudden loss. Complex or developmental trauma builds from repeated or prolonged experiences, often beginning in childhood, and tends to affect trust, identity, and how safe you feel in your own body. We provide counseling for both, adapting our approach to your history and needs.

Can I do trauma therapy online?

Yes. We offer secure telehealth across Virginia, so you can access trauma and PTSD counseling from the comfort and privacy of home. Many people find that a familiar, safe setting supports their healing. In-person sessions are also available at our Norfolk and Newport News offices.
